Another possible source is making sure "Install BSD subsystem" is
checked during the OS installation process. Panther has it checked by
default, so it's already there unless you actually turned it off. I
can't remember whether that was also the case in previous OS versions.

And whether the "make" executable is in your PATH - that always confuses
me.

I successfully installed the latest version of remind usng a binary,
which meant I didn't have to use "make" at all. I got it from:
<http://www.unmake.org/os.x/>

I don't know if that works for everyone, but it did for me.
