[Remind-Fans] remind and xmessage on Mac OS X?

Any Mac users out there know how to integrate a remind RUN statement
with xmessage on OS 10.5?

I've tried a statement such as:

REM 17:00 RUN echo Go home > /tmp/message | xmessage -file /tmp message

but that doesn't do anything (yes, X11 is running at the time).

I used to have Growl pop up my timed reminders, but the commandline
growl program apparently hasn't been updated for 10.5, so I was trying
this xmessage routine as a workaround.
