I am able to reproduce a similar error if I have DISPLAY incorrectly
set.  For example:

$ DISPLAY="" tkremind
application-specific initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ""
Error in startup script: invalid command name "wm"
    while executing
"wm withdraw ."
    (file "/usr/bin/tkremind" line 18)

Not exactly the same, but maybe it provides a clue to someone.
