Yep, that did the trick, the arrows now appear. Thanks very much, I 
appreciate it.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is great but the next Ubuntu version is not. I 
installed it awhile back on another machine and it was, well, awful. I 
think I'm going to move to Debian. I replaced Ubuntu with Debian on that 
laptop and I may install Debian on this main laptop. I'm not happy with 
yet another useless learning curve, but, oh well.
