I found out later the whole problem was caused by changes in the dslam,
somehow causing the session to stop functioning while not registering as
terminated. I solved this in the end by changing the firmware for the
Draytek Vigor 130 to an 'optimized for KPN' firmware where I was running
'optimized for Australia NBN' before.

The VDSL network is KPN here, but before the changes the 'for Australia'
firmware had the advantage of lower latency and better impulse noise
protection. But the earlier problems were annoying enough to switch over.

There is a downside to the missing impulse noise protection: As I am a
radio amateur active on HF parts that fall within the VDSL spectrum it's
somewhat annoying that any change in frequency will cause a VDSL disconnect
and retrain. I want fiber to my home.

Thanks for rp-pppoe and for the suggestions!
