sadly, configure failed with
checking for tputs in -lncurses... no
checking for tputs in -lcurses... no
checking for tputs in -ltermcap... no
checking for tputs in -lterminfo... no
checking for tputs in -ltermlib... no
checking for readline in -lreadline... no
configure: error: Can't find readline libraries

being perl-hopeless, I' don't know how to address this one.
