[Remind-Fans] Backslashes Before Spaces in Remind + Growlnotify Popup?

I've whacked my head considerably against this for the better part of an hour, and I'm stuck.

nohup remind -z1 -k'growlnotify --sticky --appIcon "Alarm Clock Pro" --title "Reminder" --message "%s"' ~/.reminders &

With this test entry:

REM August 15 2006 AT 20:56 DURATION 1:00 MSG This is a test.

Why does the pop-up instead show the text:

This\ is\ a\ test.

With backslashes before every space?

This is drivin' me bonkers!
