Ah I'd just sent my reply off just before I saw that you'd worked it
out. I have an alias in my .bash_aliases file which reads
 alias todo='vim $HOME/.reminders'

vim also has a nice syntax which colours the keywords for
your .reminders file. See some of the recent discussion on the list for
how to get it working.
