That's because (AFAIK) PostScript itself doesn't support UTF-8 directly.
You need this tool: http://u2ps.berlios.de/ (probably packaged in Ubuntu
as gnome-u2ps).

Right. But that shouldn't matter, because Remind generally ignores
characters in messages. The only place it actually cared about the
encoding was when trying to centre text in the calendar. All other
operations simply pass the text through without interpretation.
