Consider the tried and true pipeline method: use remind simply as a date sort, just as you suggested. Feed it both the data and meta-data embedded in the msg command for output, and then for formatting/grouping/colorizing, use awk on the left hand side of the pipe.

This has worked well for me in cases where remind doesn't format exactly as I want.
