[RP-PPPoE] question about "login" entry in pppoe-server-options

Hello,
I tried to establish a ppp client-server across a regular ethernet LAN
(non ADSL connection)
with rp-pppoe.
I had many authentication problems. I had to remove the "login"
entry from /etc/ppp/pppoe-server-options in order to solve them. After
removing the login
entry, I could start the pppoe client successfully.

I would appreciate if someone can elaborate and tell :
1) what is this login entry for ?
2) What should I do (I assume on the ppp server side) in order to be able to
succeed in starting a ppp connection when there is a "login" entry in
pppoe-server-options ?

As a reminder, the config file which comes with the rp-pppoe package
is **with** a login
entry:

more /usr/share/doc/rp-pppoe-3.10/configs/pppoe-server-options
# PPP options for the PPPoE server
# LIC: GPL
require-pap
login
lcp-echo-interval 10
lcp-echo-failure 2

Rgs,
Mark
