There's a plugin for PPP that you need called rp-pppoe.so.  Then
you'd use something like this in the client options:

# Change eth1 to appropriate interface
plugin rp-pppoe.so eth1
user "username"

and you would not invoke the "pppoe" user-space program with the 'pty'
option to pppd.
