Ottawa LRT Unexpectedly Runs for 24 Hours with No Problems
Ottawa, Ontario, 2026-04-09—In a completely unexpected development, the Ottawa light rail system has run for 24 hours with no problems. Jacques Lavigne, operations manager at OC Transpo, the Ottawa transit authority, admits officials were caught off-guard.
"We have extensive procedures in place to deal with stuck doors, broken power lines, and wheel bearings that catch on fire," said Lavigne, "but we had no procedures in place for this whatsoever. We had to make things up on the fly and we sincerely apologize to transit riders for the convenience."
Lavigne says the system may need to be shut down for "several days" while officials determine how this problem-free 24 hours could possibly have occurred. "Thankfully, we still have water leaking into the Rideau Centre train station, and the terrible smell at Lyon still persists, so it's not as if the service was perfect," said Lavigne. "And the public washrooms are closed indefinitely too, which helps us avoid any accusations of competence."
After 29 hours of problem-free service, the doors on Line 1 became stuck, leading to extensive delays and the popping of champagne corks in OC Transpo's main operations centre. "Thank goodness things are back to normal!" exclaimed Lavigne.
The extensions to Ottawa's Line 1 are scheduled to open in 2026 for the eastern portion and 2028 for the western portion. Lavigne said crews are hard at work on the quality of the construction, and that opening days may be delayed if necessary for crews to introduce flaws. "The opening dates are just a target," says Lavigne, "but we'll push them later if need be to avoid another unprecedented situation like this recent 24-hour stretch of problem-free service."
