[RP-PPPoE] What is the DEVICE entry for in the pppoe-start configuration file

Hello,

 My question is: what is the DEVICE entry intended for in the pppoe-start
 configuration file ?
What I mean is this:
 I tried :
 pppoe-start ifcfg-ppp5

 with
 DEVICE=ppp6

 and also
 pppoe-start ifcfg-ppp5

 with
 DEVICE=ppp7

 but the result was, as ifconfig -a showed, that it ignored the value of
 DEVICE and created the next ppp free device (which was ppp2).
So what is the DEVICE entry if the config file intended for? is it
used at all ?
