No, I don't think it is,  I pass "usepeerdns" and some magic happens 
results in the ISP provided nameservers going into my /etc/resolve.conf

It's not mandatory, but asking the question is worrying unless you're 
doing this on a machine set up just for this experiment and you accept 
that connecting it to the public internet could result in compromise...

Um, I think I my setup differs from yours here... I can just type

]# pppd call /iap//
/where /iap /is a file in /etc/ppp/peers/
